10th Annual Repeal Day Ball

What: The DC Craft Bartenders Guild and founding members are holding our 10th Annual Repeal Day Ball on December 9th, 2017, celebrating the 84th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. The over 900 expected attendees will enjoy cocktails crafted by Washington DC’s and the nation’s best bartenders while dancing along to Prohibition-era tunes. This is the inaugural year this black tie affair will be hosted at the historic Andrew C. Mellon Auditorium overlooking the National Mall. Tickets for this year’s soirée begin at $90, with VIP tickets available for $140. VIP tickets allow guests to kick the party off an hour early as well as grant access to our VIP only champagne room and after party. A portion of this years’ proceeds will go to the Anacostia Watershed Society. They are a local foundation dedicated to protecting and restoring the Anacostia River and its watershed communities by cleaning the water, recovering the shores, and honoring the heritage. Our perenially successful pop-ups are returning for another year! This year we are thrilled to welcome the team from BlackTail in New York City, the newest acclaimed program from Jack McGarry and Sean Muldoon, and Julep in Houston, helmed by the renowned Alba Huerta. BlackTail was recently named “Best New American Cocktail Bar” at the 2017 Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail, and Julep was a Top 10 finalist for the same category in 2015. “It’s All Journalism” live recording: The Future of the Alternative Press

Meetup Group and the National Press Club, the It’s All Journalism podcast will host a panel and live recording on Monday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Doors open for this free event at 6:30 p.m.The topic of the panel will be: The Future of the Alternative Press. Panelists include: Alexa Mills, editor of the Washington City Paper;Andrew Beaujon, former editor of the Washington City Paper;Jason Zaragoza, executive director of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia;Lisa Snowden-McCray, editor-in-chief of the Baltimore Beat.The panel recording will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session, all of which will be recorded for an upcoming episode of It’s All Journalism.There will be a cash bar available for those who imbibe. Donna Brazile Shares New Book on Russian Hacking of 2016 Presidential Election

What: As investigations in Congress and by Special Counsel Robert Mueller continue, one of the targets of the hacking into the Democratic National Committee’s computer network, Donna Brazile, is telling her story. The former DNC chair and longtime Democratic Party strategist shares her personal account of the 2016 Presidential election. Brazile will appear at a National Press Club Headliners Book Rap on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. in the Club’s Conference Rooms to discuss Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns That Put Donald Trump in the White House, which will be published next month on the one-year anniversary of the 2016 election. Publisher, Hachette Books, calls the book “equal parts campaign thriller, memoir and roadmap for the future.” And Brazile adds “At a moment when our democracy is in crisis, it’s time to tell the truth about what went wrong in 2016. Our nation is under unprecedented assault, and if we don’t get the facts out, it will happen again.”This event will feature a discussion with the author, an audience question-and-answer session, and a book signing. Tickets are $5 for National Press Club members and $10 for the general public. Copies of the book can be purchased online at the same time as tickets or at the event. Proceeds from this event benefit the non-profit affiliate of the Club, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, which offers innovative, practical training to journalists and communications professionals working in a rapidly-changing media environment. In our efforts to raise funds for the Journalism Institute, we ask that attendees please leave all outside books or memorabilia at home.

Jokes That Give Back: A Standup Comedy Show

Tickets are $5 and a portion of proceeds will go to Capital Area Food Bank, the largest nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the area. Spread goodwill this December by bringing cans and other food items to the show for CAFB! MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Shares New Book “Playing with Fire” & the Lasting Impact of the 1968 Presidential Election

What: MSNBC anchor and Emmy-winning TV writer Lawrence O’Donnell will appear at a National Press Club Headliners Book Rap at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, to discuss his new book, Playing with Fire: The 1968 Election and the Transformation of American Politics. In Playing with Fire, O’Donnell, host of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” tells the story of the chaotic 1968 election that eventually saw the ascension of Richard Nixon to the White House in the midst of the Vietnam War. Complete with a full cast of characters – Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Eugene McCarthy – Penguin Press says that with new insights O’Donnell, “recounts an election where nothing went according to script” and “an ominous tone was set for Watergate and all else that was to follow.” O’Donnell joined MSNBC as a political analyst in 1996. He was the executive producer and writer for the former NBC television series “The West Wing.” His career in politics spanned many years as a Capitol Hill aide where served as a senior advisor to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-New York and the chief of staff on two Senate committees. This event will feature a discussion with the author, an audience question-and-answer session, and a book signing.
