June 27th – July 4th 2018

Hello friends!! Join us every Wednesday for the events not to miss in the coming weeks.  While our google calendar is great, sometimes events can get lost in the sauce.  So here are some events we are excited for in the coming week!!

Toli Moli x Duende District Present: COOK + BOOK “Lao Dumplings!”
Who: Toli Moli x Duende District
What: Toli Moli x Duende District present: COOK + BOOK, a friendly gathering on the last Wednesday of each month to learn more about cooking with Asian ingredients at home. On June 27th, the sixth edition of COOK + BOOK returns to Union Market! This Lao Dumpling cooking class is co-sponsored by Foodhini, founded on the idea that food can be used to create new opportunities for our immigrant and refugee communities by preparing and delivering authentic multicultural meals. What is Sakhoo Yat Sai? The texture is light and tender, handmade one by one and prepared in a large steamer. The outer layer is constructed of mini tapioca pearls steamed to the perfect softness, while the inside is a tasty savory mix of ground turkey, crushed peanuts, shallots, and sweet radish. As three immigrant-owned businesses, we’re especially excited to share with you this unique and delicious dish from Foodhini’s own Chef Mem. While Mem began cooking later in life, her journey spanned many years of preparing food for her family and friends for holiday gatherings. Mem learned Lao cooking from her mother-in-law by watching her in the kitchen and preparing meals for the family. Mem recounted her memories in learning to cook: “As a daughter-in-law, I wanted to learn to cook Lao cuisine because I wanted to cook for my family.” Since then, Chef Mem has mastered her culinary skills and has become quite popular in the DC Lao community by catering for community gatherings. After class, chat with Chef Mem and Team Toli Moli about what ingredients at Toli Moli’s Burmese Bodega you can use for home cooking. Following the demonstration, thanks to a partnership with Harvey’s Market, Almaala Farms and Toli Moli, you’ll also get a “bodega bag” filled with ingredients to make your own Sakhoo Yat Sai at home! This month’s featured book available for purchase is The Immigrant Cookbook: Recipes That Make America Great, a culinary celebration of the many ethnic groups that have contributed to America s vibrant food culture. This beautifully photographed book features appetizers, entrees, and desserts by renowned chefs from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. Each month at COOK + BOOK, you’ll have the opportunity to: purchase a book written or recommended by the chef enjoy dynamic conversations with local food entrepreneurs take home a “bodega bag” with key ingredients from class meet new friends interested in Asian food and cultures learn a new recipe using Asian ingredients from Toli Moli’s Burmese Bodega and other Union Market businesses.

Listening Club: Food Freedom with Health Coach Lina Salazar
Who: Health Coach Lina Salazar
What:PODCAST LISTENING CLUB: #003 / Food Freedom with Co-Host Lina Salazar, Live Well Behold. Her, Live Well and Sweet Green join forces to hold a podcast club series around food freedom for women in the DMV at The Yard. Food freedom touches on a variety of issues such as body image, eating disorders, emotional eating, binge eating, self-esteem, fat acceptance, among others. The Listening Club series on food freedom will be a space to have constructive and uplifting discussions around women’s tricky relationship with food/body. – Sometimes we’re aware of it, sometimes we aren’t, but the fear of gaining weight or being fat scares most women. As a result, we become obsessed about what we should or shouldn’t eat, how we should or shouldn’t look. – These thoughts determine the way we experience food and relate to our bodies. We often feel guilt or shame after we eat or look at ourselves in the mirror. For some women this is a mild obsession, for others it turns into an eating disorder. – The opposite of this state of insanity is food freedom, a place in which we’re able to enjoy food and people around us, forgive ourselves when we eat too much and don’t try to “correct” it for the sake of weight-loss, and feel more at ease in our own skin. – Food freedom doesn’t come once we’re able to change our shape and size. We achieve it when we transform the way we think. For June’s Listening Club, we take a step in that direction and challenge the way we think about fat, dieting, body acceptance, health and wellness. Join us if you want to have an open, non-judgemental conversation about making peace with food and our bodies. – Episode / Please listen to “Tell Me I’m Fat” on This American Life before the event! – Key Talking Points:  Food freedom –  Fatphobia in modern society – Body acceptance – Diet mentality. What the hell is a podcast listening club? It’s like a book club, but with podcasts! How many times have you awkwardly laughed in public or shed tears during a drive from listening? The Listening Club is bringing podcast listeners together in a space to meet chicas face-to-face, circle up and buckle in for an intimate conversation on an episode. Subscribe to our newsletter to be notified of our Suggested Listens for each month. Tag us in your stories or feed using #BHLISTENS while you’re listening to a podcast. Tell us what you think about that episode and you may win entry to one of our future events!

90’s Bitch: An Evening with Allison Yarrow
Who: Allison Yarrow
What: About the book: 90’s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality The close of the 20th century promised a new era of gender equality. However, the iconic women of the 1990s—such as Hillary Clinton, Courtney Love, Roseanne Barr, Marcia Clark, and Anita Hill—earned their places in history not as trailblazers, but as whipping girls of the media. During this decade, American society grew increasingly hostile to women who dared to speak up, challenge power, or defy rigid expectations for female behavior. Deeply researched yet thoroughly engaging, 90s Bitch untangles the complex history of women in the 1990s, exploring how they were maligned by the media, vilified by popular culture, and objectified in the marketplace. In an age where even a presidential nominee can be derided as a “nasty woman,” it’s clear that the epidemic of casting women as bitches persists. To understand why we must take a long, hard look back at the 1990s—a decade in which female empowerment was twisted into bitchification and exploitation.
