Combating Hunger, Creating Opportunity.
DC Central Kitchen is America’s leader in reducing hunger with recycled food, training unemployed adults for culinary careers, serving healthy school meals, and rebuilding urban food systems through social enterprise.
How they help:
Combating Hunger
*They prepare meals, serving thousands of our most vulnerable neighbors each day.
Creating Opportunity
*They train unemployed men and women, empowering them to replace homelessness, addiction, and crime with culinary careers.
Nourishing Communities
*They fight for food justice, working with small, local farmers to bring healthy food and fresh produce to DC schools and corner stores.
Resisting Recession
*They strengthen the local economy, using social enterprise to create jobs for our culinary trainees and promote self-sufficiency among those we help.
For more than 25 years, DC Central Kitchen has pioneered a new model of using food as a tool to change lives. The organization provides nutritious meals to 80 nearby nonprofit partners, equips unemployed men and women to begin culinary careers, and creates healthy, scratch-cooked, locally-sourced meals for children at 10 DC schools. Through job training, healthy food distribution, and local small business partnerships, DC Central Kitchen offers path-breaking solutions to poverty, hunger, and poor health.
