The MahoganyBooks & Very Smart Brothas November Book Club
Who: The MahoganyBooks & Very Smart Brothas
What: Well Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves, is an anthology of 21 phenomenal Black women writers revealing how finding themselves in literature prepared — sustained — them in the face of a media that actively seeks to erase or misrepresent them.
The MahoganyBooks & Very Smart Brothas book club is excited to announce that our November book is none other than Well Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves written by DC home girl, Glory Edim. This recently released book grew out of the authors want to connect with other women “who lived by and for the words of black female writers.” The Well Read Black Girl phenomenon speaks to the urgency, need, and want for inclusion and representation of Black women into literature in particular, but also the larger community of non-white persons in general. From it’s days as an Instagram page started in 2015, to a highly visible online platform, and now having just concluded it’s second literary festival, Glory Edim has put in the work to curate, honor, and build community around Black women voices in the literary space. Her anthology, showcasing some a number of sharing their personal stories of how representative literature has impacted and shaped their lives is the perfect choice for the MahoganyBooks + Very Smart Brothas November book club selection. We invite you to stop by the store or go online to grab you copy for our upcoming book discussion of ‘Well Read Black Girl’ on December 7, 2018 from 6 PM to 8PM at MahoganyBooks, located inside of the Anacostia Arts Center. We are also excited to announce that the author, Glory, will be joining us for the book discussion that evening. Seating is limited so we encourage you to reserve your seat now. RSVP’s will be given first priority for the event. If any seats remain, those will be given to individuals on a first come, first served basis.

Black Womens Health – Are We At Risk ? – Sister Support Meetup (Washington,DC)
Who: Sister Support
What: While not implicitly a continuum, it follows a trend in America that’s been going on for far too long: black female women not receiving the adequate medical attention they deserve while in intensive care.
Black women are three times more likely to die from being pregnant than white women and black people in general are systematically undertreated for pain.
Kim Porter’s sudden death have many calling out doctors who ignore black women’s pain. Do you remember Kira Johnson, who passed away after a treatable post-delivery complication because doctors reportedly took to long to act? Or even Serena Williams who almost died during childbirth? Then there is the story of Danielle Radford, a comedian who was hit by a bus and went viral for sharing her story and the fact that doctors simply subscribed her Advil for her pain. Sure, she went viral for the absurdity of the story, but also, because she sparked a conversation for so many black women, who have also received less-than-adequate medical care for serious ailments mostly because they were simply not believed. Last tennis superstar, Serena Williams, is speaking out about the harrowing post-delivery scare that almost killed her, sparking a discussion that she hopes will lead to change.
The Washington Post reports that a 2000 study out of Emory University found that at a hospital emergency department in Atlanta, 74 percent of white patients with bone fractures were given painkillers compared with 50 percent of Black patients.
WaPo also highlighted a 2007 study, which found that physicians were more likely to underestimate the pain of Black patients compared with other patients.
Join us on Saturday, December 8th as we discuss and provide tips for self-care and wellness.
