Conference Happened: The 10th Annual Washington Writers Conference

The Washington Independent Review of Books Presents

The 10th Annual Washington Writers Conference

I had the pleasure of attending the 10th Annual Washington Writers Conference. I have been talking about writing a book for almost as long as this conference has existed but this was my first year attending.

What You Missed: Agents – The centerpiece of this annual conference is one-on-one pitch sessions with literary agents from across the country. Expert sessions with publishing pros on the craft of writing and paths to publishing. From writing historical fiction to the business of writing and more, our sessions are designed to support your literary endeavors! A chance to make your publishing dream a reality during this time when so many things have been canceled, postponed, or rendered unrecognizable!

I got the opportunity to pull up at the Washington Writers Conference and I’m so glad I did. Nevin Martell gave a workshop on “How to be a Rockstar Freelancer” with Elizabeth Chang. If you want some insider industry info, check out Nevin’s workshops which he also gives virtually from time to time. There was a session on “What’s New in Midgrade/YA”, a panel with Meg Kuyatt, Sathya Achia, Ann Fraistat, Lillie Lainoff. During lunch we got a wonderful keynote from Dolen Perkins-Valdez in conversation with Bethanne Patrick. What I was most excited for was the panel called “Muzzled Expression: The Alarming Rise in Book Bans. Sarah Trembath was the moderator with Cheryl A Head, Nadine Farid Johnson and David Payne. With banned books on the rise, I’ve been very interested in the fight. There’s never been a period of time where banning books was a good thing. So don’t be surprised if you see a banned book guide from me soon. My last session was “Building Your Writing Community” with Tara Campbell, Myna Change, Amy Freeman and Melanie Hatter. It was such a great day of learning and growing, if you are interested in writing, you should definitely sign up for next year which is Friday May 3rd and Saturday May 4th.
