Doing
Long Beard
What: Means To Me is the second full-length under Leslie Bear’s moniker, Long Beard, and her first since 2015’s Sleepwalker. Throughout the record, Leslie explores what constitutes a home, how it extends beyond the physicality of a roof over your head to the comfort of another person. A sense of self, stability, or security. The last four years between records mark a particularly significant and transitional time for Bear. A career move led her back to her hometown in New Jersey long after her friends and peers moved away, resulting in feelings of stasis and nostalgia that shaped the album. Reflections on the past are evident in tracks like album single “Sweetheart,” in which Bear considers a past love, where they are now, and her life in relation to theirs.

Andy Shauf – 9:30 Club
What: Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they are densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline (out January 24 via ANTI-), he sets a familiar scene of inviting a friend for beers on the opening title track: “I said, ‘Come to the Skyline, I’ll be washing my sins away.’ He just laughed, said ‘I’ll be late, you know how I can be.'” The LP’s 11 interconnected tracks follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up.

Book Launch; Indigenous D.C.: Native Peoples and the Nation’s Capital
What: Washington, D.C., is on Native land, but Indigenous peoples are often left out of the national narrative. Join American University professor Elizabeth Rule for a discussion about how we might redress this myth of invisibility. In her new book, Indigenous D.C.: Native Peoples and the Nation’s Capital, Dr. Rule shines a light on the contributions of Indigenous tribal leaders and politicians, artists, and activists to the rich history of the District. Inspired by her award-winning public history mobile app and decolonial mapping project, Guide to Indigenous D.C., the book underscores that all land is Native land. Its narrative arc encompasses an account of the original inhabitants who call the District their traditional territory, and members of the Indigenous diaspora who have created community in the U.S. capital. This program is presented in partnership with GW’s Center for Washington Area Studies.

A Cultural DC Night in Argentina: Fundraiser for “Never in Our Image”
What: Never in Our Image is a three-part experimental opera that presents Mercedes’ process of gun transformation through sound. Mercedes creates musical instruments and sonic sculptures from reclaimed guns. Through cutting, melting, and utilizing instruments cast from weapons Mercedes composes musical scores. The work forces the archetype of violence into its opposite: the beauty of music and art. This three-part performance invites the public to become a part of the cathartic experience of gun transformation. In this opera, by queering sound and metal, we ask ourselves the question: how can we reclaim materials that were never made in our image?

Pinback – 9:30 Club
What: The partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Smith (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. Pinback made their Touch & Go debut in fall 2004 with Summer in Abaddon, which saw the band members continue slowly to push themselves a bit further with complex song structures while maintaining their indie pop sensibilities. Two years later, the band issued Nautical Antiques, a collection of rarities and B-sides spanning from 1998 to 2001. Their second album for Touch & Go, Autumn of the Seraphs, followed in 2007. Though it would be five years before Pinback followed up, their 2012 album, Information Retrieved, found them easily settling into their melodic groove.

Depolarizing Within (DC – State)
What: Polarization can be driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side. Too often, we stereotype, dismiss, or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party, its leaders, and its policies. This free 3 hour in-person workshop teaches participants: How to be more aware of their own “inner polarizer”, How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping large swaths of the population, & how to constructively intervene in polarizing social conversations with like-minded people.

Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV

Author: Camille T. Dungy
Title: The Story of A Black Mother’s Garden Soil
Description: In Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden, poet, and scholar Camille T. Dungy recounts the seven-year odyssey to diversify her garden in the predominantly white community of Fort Collins, Colorado. When she moved there in 2013 with her husband and daughter, the community held restrictions about what residents could and could not plant in their gardens. In resistance to the homogenous policies that limited the possibility and wonder that grows from the earth, Dungy employs the various plants, herbs, vegetables, and flowers she grows in her garden as metaphor and treatise for how homogeneity threatens the future of our planet, and why cultivating diverse and intersectional language in our national discourse about the environment is the best means of protecting it.
