Doing

Profs & Pints DC: Artificial Intelligence and You
What: Profs and Pints DC presents: “Artificial Intelligence and You,” a look at AI’s huge unseen impact on society and your daily life, with Lauren Maffeo, adjunct lecturer in Interaction Design at George Washington University, a founding editor of the journal AI and Ethics, and author of Designing Data Governance from the Ground Up. The release of various iterations of ChatGPT, an artificial-intelligence chatbot with extraordinary powers to learn and generate images and ideas, has given rise to the perception that we’re entering an “AI Era” full of promise and peril. While the fans of ChatGPT praise it for its ease of use and accuracy, many scientists and government officials are sounding alarms of potential consequences evoking dystopian science-fiction films. A long list of computer scientists and tech industry officials have signed a letter arguing that AI labs are “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control,” with “profound risks to society and humanity.”

250 Years of Trees at Kew: An Illustrated Lecture by Tony Kirkham
What: This illustrated lecture begins around 1731 and takes us on an historic journey through the development of the tree collections and the heritage landscape, meeting people like Sir William Hooker, Capability Brown, William Nesfield, William Baron, William Dallimore, and many more figures who were key movers in the arboretum world, responsible for making Kew’s arboretum one of the world’s premier tree collections today. Attendees will be guided from the founding of a 9-acre botanic garden with 5-acres set aside for an arboretum where some of the original trees known as the “Old Lions” still exist to the first director of Kew, Sir William Hooker, being appointed through to the 1987 hurricane that ravaged the collections and the transformation that followed. The talk will focus on some of the key heritage trees and important scientific tree collections that can be found growing in the arboretum landscape and the collectors and curators that have been influential in assembling this unique collection. The lecture will end with more recent tree related overseas collecting expeditions and Kew-based projects including the Xstrata Treetop Walkway which was designed to give visitors safe access to the tree canopy and create a “Sky Classroom.”

Reading

Author: Eriq La Salle
Title: Laws of Wrath

Description: There are those who fight the devil within them. And those who worship it. The butchered body of a cross-dresser is found in a dumpster in Chinatown, New York. Nothing out of the ordinary for the NYPD, except the victim just so happens to be the brother of Detective Phee Freeman. At first the slaying looks like the random act of a vicious killer, but when it is discovered that there are similar ritualistic murders throughout the city, Phee, and his partner Quincy Cavanaugh, along with FBI Agent Janet Maclin, have no choice but to join forces with Dr. Daria Zibik, a brilliant but deranged Satanic cult leader. Phee and his partners must do everything they can to stop the bloodshed and determine if the evil they are hunting and the psychopath they are trusting could actually be one and the same.

Author: Angela Davis
Title: Angela Davis: An Autobiography

Description: “I am excited to be publishing this new edition of my autobiography with Haymarket Books at a time when so many are making collective demands for radical change and are seeking a deeper understanding of the social movements of the past.” – Angela Y. Davis. Angela Davis has been a political activist at the cutting edge of the Black Liberation, feminist, queer, and prison abolitionist movements for more than 50 years. First published and edited by Toni Morrison in 1974, An Autobiography is a powerful and commanding account of her early years in the struggle. Davis describes her journey from childhood on Dynamite Hill in Birmingham, Alabama, to one of the most significant political trials of the century: from her political activity in a New York high school to her work with the U.S. Communist Party, the Black Panther Party, and the Soledad Brothers; and from the faculty of the Philosophy Department at UCLA to the FBI’s list of the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. Told with warmth, brilliance, humor, and conviction, Angela Davis’s autobiography is a classic account of a life in struggle with echoes in our own time.

Title: A Recipe for More: Ingredients for a life of abundance and ease

Description: A Recipe for More is a quest to examine the ingredients of our lives, those essential components that make up our days. Have we chosen rest, breath, movement, agency, visibility, play, and pleasure? Or are we trapped in the numbing and violent pattern of self-inflicted suffering? Do we celebrate the unique and precious wiring of our brains? Are our relationships a garden of ever-growing and evolving roots? Do we nourish our bodies with what it requires to sense and receive? Are we liberated, awakened, and alive? In the tradition of Adrienne Maree Brown and Sonya Renee Taylor, A Recipe for More is a radical argument for dismantling the systems that oppress us. But it begins with the individual, and the simple recipe of our every day.
