The Comedy Shuffle (Stand-up with Live Color Commentary)
Who: DC Commedy Loft
What: Unlike every other comedy show you’ve ever been to, The Comedy Shuffle never has bad jokes.
“That’s impossible.”
NAY! At The Comedy Shuffle, a comic (any comic) does jokes while a seasoned comic (also lit and w/ a mic) interrupts them. If their joke doesn’t initially work, the Shuffler’s burns do. The Shuffler can end their set at any time (if it’s not going well), or let the comic go a little longer to find some brand new material (in a supportive, but accountable atmosphere). It’s not mean. It’s not. Okay. It’s a little mean. But, it’s fun and constructive too. The show is in the basement of The Comedy Loft (2 blocks west of Dupont Circle) at 8pm every Monday. Doors at 7:30pm. (List to sign-up goes out at 7pm.)
Where: The Bier Baron Tavern and DC Comedy Loft, 1523 22nd Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20037
When: Mon Nov 7th, 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM EST

Profs & Pints DC: The Women’s Uprisings in Iran
Who: Profs and Pints
What: Profs and Pints DC presents: “The Women’s Uprisings in Iran,” with Narges Bajoghli, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, co-director of the school’s Rethinking Iran Initiative, and author of Iran Reframed: Anxieties of Power in the Islamic Republic. The streets of Iran are filled with chants of “Women! Life! Freedom!” as that nation experiences something many assumed would never happen there: An uprising against its political leadership led by women and girls. Sparked by the September 16th killing of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Jina Amini, while in the custody of Iran’s “morality police” for failing to comply with Islamic dress codes, the movement has at its heart an insistence that there is no such thing as political freedom without bodily autonomy. It has spread throughout Iran—prompting a government crackdown that has killed hundreds—and given rise to new visions for political futures both in Iran and globally. Come gain a firm understanding of these uprisings and what they mean for Iran and the rest of the world with the help of Narges Bajoghli, an award-winning political anthropologist, writer, and professor whose past research on Iran has given her unprecedented access to those in power as well as to the social movements struggling against the state. Dr. Bajoghli will discuss the women and girls at the forefront of this movement and how they are refusing to comply any longer with laws and systems that oppress them. She’ll update us on the latest developments in the movement, analyze what the movement means for Iranian society and politics, and look at its prospects of withstanding government efforts to squelch dissent long enough to bring real change. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, or $13 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.)
Where: Little Penn Coffeehouse – 801 E St NW, Washington, DC 20004
When: Monday, Nov 7 2022 – 6:00 PM — 8:30 PM EST

A Night In Panama with Chef Yadira
Who: Chef Yadira Stamp
Yadira Stamp is an Afro-Latina chef, speaker, and restauranteur specializing in authentic Panamanian cooking. Born and raised in Panama City, Chef Yadira discovered her passion for the culinary arts at an early age while helping with her mother’s catering business, where she learned the traditional cooking techniques she still uses today. While earning her Culinary Degree at the Art Institute of Washington, she opted to return to Panama for her externship rather than France, where she spent three months studying under culinary matriarchs in the countryside who taught her about the wonderful world of native Panamanian gastronomy. In 2012, Chef Yadira founded Esencias Panameñas in Washington, DC—one of only a handful of Panamanian food businesses in the United States. Voted Best of D.C. three years in a row, Esencias Panameñas serves authentic Panamanian cuisine encapsulating the flavors of Panama, the Caribbean, and Central America, and is the only Panamanian catering company in the U.S. to offer its food nationwide. Chef Yadira has maintained a pay-it-forward mantra and has spent much of her career volunteering, mentoring, performing cooking demonstrations, and serving culinary creations throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. Always excited about the soulfulness of food, both in nutrients and taste, she volunteers her time cooking dinner at local food banks, DC Central Kitchen, and N Street Village, a community for women. She volunteered for the D.C. Latino Education Development Center by providing mentorship to Hispanic women who are aspiring entrepreneurs. She is also a member of the World Central Kitchen organization.
What: Join Chef Yadira Stamp in celebrating the launch of her first cookbook, the 10th anniversary of Esencias Panameñas, and her 60th birthday!

Watching – Nov 2022

I watch an embarrassing amount of television sometimes, often while trying to find the bottom of my inbox. I’ve just finished a few series and movies that I’ve really enjoyed and would recommend!! I’m cut back this week for some reading time!

On Netflix – Enola Holmes 2 was everything I expected it to be. Millie Bobby Brown is so talented. Definitely recomend it. I was disappointed to discover that I’ve already seen this final season of Manifest. I was so looking forward to it but I’m like been there, seen that.

Peacock – Season 2 of “One of Us is Lying” was so great and it defintely is calling for another season with it’s cliff hanger ending!! Don’t think they’ve announced it yet so fingers crossed. Still counting down the days for them to drop Best Man The Final Chapter. It’s about to be so good and kinda bitter sweet! Getting ready to watch the Barney doc next cause it sounds really facinating.

Check back next week for more to do, read, eating and watch!!
