Education Summit 2022
Who: The Atlantic
What: Education lays the foundation for our culture, democracy, and economy. The past two and a half years have revealed and exacerbated the significant issues and challenges facing our students, teachers, and society. Many students struggle with mental health, teachers feel burned out, the opportunity gap has widened, and college enrollment has declined. But these challenges have also spurred a renewed focus on finding sustainable solutions and reimagining a more equitable education system designed for the future.
The Atlantic will gather educators, students, and policy makers to discuss the most pressing challenges, workable solutions, and how we can build an education system that centers on equity and innovation and prepares students to succeed in the future workforce.

Jon Meacham In Conversation with Clint Smith
Who: Sixth & I
What: In And There Was Light, the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and #1 New York Times bestselling author chronicles the life of Abraham Lincoln, charting how—and why—he confronted secession, threats to democracy, and the tragedy of slavery to expand the possibilities of America. A president who governed a divided country has much to teach us in a twenty-first-century moment of polarization and political crisis. Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when implacable secessionists showed no mercy in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. Meacham’s illuminating new portrait tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier in an antislavery Baptist community to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, self-education, loves, bouts of depression, political failures, deepening faith, and persistent conviction that slavery must end. In a nation shaped by the courage of the enslaved of the era and by the brave witness of Black Americans, Lincoln’s story illustrates the ways and means of politics in a democracy, the roots and durability of racism, and the capacity of conscience to shape events.
Jon Meacham will be in conversation with Clint Smith, a staff writer at The Atlantic and the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller How the Word is Passed. https://www.sixthandi.org/event/jon-meacham/

Reading – Oct 2022

Someone just recently put me on to the “The Go-Giver: A Little Story about a Powerful Business Idea” by John David Mann and Bob Burg which is a pretty incredible little book that that brings new relevance to the old proverb Give and you shall receive. It has really been resonating with me and how I live. It has been a radical reminder that there is more than one way to do things.

Added to the To Read List:
*Rest Is Resistance by Tricia Hersey, aka The Nap Bishop
*Bevelations: Lessons from a Mutha, Auntie, Bestie by Bevy Smith
*How We Heal: Uncover Your Power and Set Yourself Free by Alexandra Elle – Coming out November 8, 2022 (She’ll be in DC Nov 6th – https://www.ticketweb.com/event/alex-elle-how-we-heal-howard-theatre-tickets/12491275?pl=howardtheatre&refid=artist)
*Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem by April Ryan

Watching – Oct 2022

I watch an embarrassing amount of television, often while trying to find the bottom of my inbox. I’ve just finished a few series and movies that I’ve really enjoyed and would recommend if it’s your type of movie!!

Seen on Netflix – Wedding Season, Uncharted, Fate: The Winx Saga (what can I say, I love magic), Entergalatic, Jexi, and Purple Hearts

HBOMax – Rothaniel is not new but I just rewatched it in preparation for seeing Jerrod Carmichael live at Lincoln Theater last week.

Disney+ – “Thor: Love and Thunder” was a lot of fun to watch, I’m definitely a full fledge Marvel fan (who is beyond excited for the upcoming Black Panther). I also finally finished She-Hulk and really enjoyed how they chose to end it so I’d recommend it. Definitely played with some important themes but also managed to keep it still full of laughs.

Peacock – I have a Real Housewives habit, but we don’t have to talk about that. I’m getting ready to start “One of Us is Lying” because I read that book in bookclub so I’m curious to see the movie adaptation. I also REALLY enjoyed Honk for Jesus which I actually got to experience at the Martha’s Vineyard African America Film Festival. Check back next Monday for more to do, read and watch!!
