GAS
Who: Wolfgang Voigt
What: Wolfgang Voigt is an artist, music producer, label owner, and one of the co-founders of the Cologne-based electronica and techno label Kompakt. Voight, who came of age in Germany during the pop sub-culture of the 1970s and 1980s, has developed his own art and sound that crosses genres, mixing music styles such as glam rock, pop, jazz, classic, punk, and new wave with art movements like pop art and the Neue Wilde (the ‘New Wild Ones’). His project GAS, an intoxicatingly sinister work of sound art based on highly condensed classical sound sources, thrills global audiences far beyond the traditional electronica and techno music scenes. By combining abstract nature sounds, strings, and brass with cover designs of photographs he took in the forest, Voigt shows his strong affinity for Romanticism and portrays the forest as a mysterious and melancholic place. Two fundamental approaches characterize Voigt’s music and artwork. The first: the loop principle—the static or varying repetition of minimalist, repetitive structures which generate specific patterns. The second: the abstract deforming and condensing of sounds or images reduced to their original basic structure. While Voigt often cannot resist the attraction of extreme abstraction, he nevertheless respects the clear rules of a 4/4 beat, the three-minute pop song, and the serial patterns found on industrially produced wallpaper.
Where: Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA
When: Sun, March 25th,2018 8pm – 11pm

TIBETAN NOMAD CUISINE WITH CHEF DORJEE
Who: Chef Dorjee
What: On March 28th, the third edition of COOK + BOOK will take place at Union Market with a cooking class focused on making Tibetan nomad style dumpling soup with former Buddhist monk and refugee, Chef Dorjee Tsering of Dorjee Momo. Learn the techniques behind the unique flavors and heartfelt preparation of this special Himalayan dish. After class, chat with Chef Dorjee about what ingredients at Toli Moli’s Burmese Bodega you can use for home cooking. Following Chef Dorjee’s demonstration, thanks to a partnership with Harvey’s MarketAlmaala Farms and Toli Moli, you’ll also get a “bodega bag” filled with everything you need to make your own Chicken ChuMok at home! Chicken and chicken-based products like eggs and chicken stock are not traditionally part of Tibetan cuisine inside Tibet, where yak and sheep meat are the main proteins. However, as Tibetans have migrated around the world, chicken has become a popular substitute in the diaspora (especially in India and Nepal). Chu means “water” and mok is derived from mok-thuy meaning “hearty soup”. The entire family makes the dumplings or noodles together and prepares the broth base. Perfect for unwinding from the day and including everyone in the process. This month’s featured book available for purchase is Return to the Rivers: Recipes and Memories of the Himalayan River Valley by Vikas Khanna with Andrew Blackmore-Dobbyn. Nominated for both a James Beard Award and the IACP Cookbook Award, Return to Rivers explores the sacred foodways of Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, Northern India, Burma, Western China, Pakistan, and the other regions the great Himalayas directly touch upon, including Burmese soup, Tibetan pancakes, and momos.

Each month at COOK + BOOK, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • purchase a book written or recommended by the chef presenter
  • enjoy dynamic conversations moderated by local food entrepreneurs
  • take home a “bodega bag” with key ingredients from class
  • meet new friends interested in Asian food, cultures, and cuisine
  • learn a new recipe using Asian ingredients from Toli Moli’s Burmese Bodega and other Union Market businesses

In collaboration with Union Market.
Where: Union Market, 7003, 1309 5th St NE, Washington, DC 20002, USA
