Dish & Sip: Journeys in Food and Art
Who: Dish & Sip
What: Dine Diaspora X Tabi Bonney present “Dish and Sip: Journeys in Food and Art”
Earlier on this year, the Dine Diaspora team traveled to Accra, Ghana to explore some of the youngest and brightest minds disrupting the food and beverage scene in Accra, Ghana. We’ll be showcasing our documentary film “Foodieventure: Accra” alongside Tabi Bonney’s “Le Bon Voyage: Beneath the Clouds” portrait collection. Following the screening, there will be a live discussion with Tabi Bonney and Dine Diaspora about the connections between food, travel and art.
“Foodieventure: Accra” Film – This short documentary film showcases some of the brightest minds disrupting the food and beverage scene in Accra, Ghana. The Dine Diaspora team – Maame Boakye, Nana Ama Afari-Dwamena, and Nina Oduro – traveled from Washington, DC to Accra to meet these culinary pioneers in this bustling city. From creative drinks by Havana Grand Prix 3rd Place Winner, Johnson “Ace Bartender” Wisdom, to a unique nomadic Fulani dining experience by Chef Binta and delicious twist on a traditional snack by entrepreneur, Jamie Saleeby’s Sankofa Snack Foods, this film is for the culinary inquisitive and the travel aficionado.
“Le Bon Voyage: Beneath the Clouds” Portrait Collection: This exhibit highlights the Surma people of the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia. They are known for their elaborate body paint and impressive lip discs, a sign of beauty and status, particularly for the women. The Surma are semi-nomadic cattle herders who live on the west side of the Omo River – a remote area still underdeveloped. The building of dams and the establishment of national parks offer promise, but also have the potential to further jeopardize the livelihood of the Surma. For these reasons, the Surma people are considered a “disappearing tribe.” Their culture and way of life may not survive another 10 years.
Tabi Bonney: Born in Togo, West Africa and raised in Washington, DC,Tabi Bonney follows in the footsteps of his activist-musician father, Togo born Itadi Bonney, who spent his life focused on one mission: to bring the “music” of “home” to the US. As an artist in music, Tabi earns domestic and global radio and TV exposure, and has performed on stages wordwide. An entrepreneur, Tabi produced and distributed his own fashion line, bonneyrunway, which would lead to collaborations featuring product designs with African fabrics and prints. Like his father, Tabi finds himself expressing about “home.” Through his portraits on display, Tabi is expressing one of the most magical and stunning “homes” he’s ever visited.

PAKKE Featured: Blindfolded Dinner
Who: PAKKE
What: PAKKE Featured: Blindfolded Dinner
Are you ready for a unique sensory experience? Turn off your visual brain for a hot minute and join us for a blindfolded dinner party with a few wonderful strangers. We will feature four courses to delight and intrigue your senses, prepared by our dear friends and badass local changemakers, Lead Chef Nic Bash, founder of HoneyFlower Foods and Sous Chef Dan Schnitzer, PhD, and CEO of SparkMeter. Miriam Berg, Sensory Guide Extraordinaire, will lead your tasting journey.
Why a Blindfolded Dinner?
Smell and taste are closely connected to pleasure sensors in the brain, however since we are predominantly visual, we rarely stop to savor these senses. Also, meeting a group of cool people without seeing them is fun and refreshing way to connect. So, we invite you to close your eyes and focus on experiencing taste with a group of 10 strangers, two chefs and a sensory experience guide.
“There’s a certain anxiety about the savage nature of eating and flavor. Philosophers and scientists have traditionally regarded taste as a base sense, whereas vision or hearing were construed to be a higher sense, a refined sense.” – John McQuaid, author of Taste: The Art and Science of What we Eat
Run of Show
7 pm – Arrive & cocktail
7:30 pm Courses 1-4 are served
8:30 pm Blindfolds off, see everyone and hang out for after-dinner drinks on the roof
Please bring something to share – a delicious beverage and (if possible) a book or unique artifact you absolutely love.
