Happenings

October 24th – October  31st, 2018

Hello friends!! Join us every Wednesday for the events not to miss in the coming weeks.  While our google calendar is great, sometimes events can get lost in the sauce.  So here are some events we are excited for in the coming week!!

Pumpkin Palooza 2018 Presented by NoMa BID
Who: NoMa BID
What: Get your orange on! Join friends and neighbors at NoMa’s 6th Annual Halloween pumpkin deocrating extravaganza. Invite a friend and come on over to the corner of Pierce and 1st Street to decorate one of our 800 pumpkins (carving and painting tools will be provided) and snap some photos with some of the cuddly farm animals in the petting zoo. We’ll provide some fun festive snacks for everyone and local food trucks will have some tasty food for purchase. If that isn’t enough, come get your face painted or watch Ryan Forrester Band bring the party with music for everyone!
Other important things to note:
Please reserve a spot by registering for the event so we can hold a pumpkin for you. Only one pumpkin is allowed per person. We’ll hang on to reserved pumpkins until 5:00 PM before we release them to other guests. We are only able to give away one pumpkin per person that is in attendance, so if you register for more pumpkins than there are guests in your party on the day of the event, we will hold the extra pumpkins until the rest of your group arrives. If we see duplicate registrations, we’ll delete all but one.
Parents, please ensure your children are supervised at all times.
Dogs are more than welcome, but they must be well-behaved and on a leash.
In case of inclement weather, we will cancel the event programming, but will still give away pumpkins.
We look forward to seeing you on October 24th!

1 Million Cups Washington, D.C. 2018: Week 44
Who: 1 Million Cups Washington DC
What: We are proud to bring 1 Million Cups to Washington, D.C. weekly. Be part of a global movement to caffeinate our ecosystem and make a profound impact on a bi-monthly basis, on the second and last Wednesday morning 8:30am-10:00am at 1776 D.C. You’ll also enjoy coffee and make connections with others who are interested in supporting local entrepreneurs. Come early to get through building security and have a chance to chat with the organizers and attendees. We will start promptly at 8:30am.
Transportation: McPherson Square Metro Stop (Blue/Orange/Silver Line) or Farragut North (Red Line). Check out Parkopedia for parking garages.
PRESENTER: Haley Russell, Co-Founder & CEO of Chippin Snacks. We believe that what our dogs eat can be healthful, fun and – with the right ingredients – a force for change. We couldn’t find a traditional “treat” that fit so we created our powerful and tasty snacks. Chippin snacks are made with cricket protein. AGENDA: Each week will start with time to network and make connections with D.C.’s movers, shakers, and local business owners than at 9am hear from one business owner or company on their most current business challenge while having the opportunity to ask questions and offer feedback to the founder(s). ABOUT 1 MILLION CUPS: 1 Million Cups (1MC) is a simple way to engage entrepreneurs in communities around the world. Each week, the 1MC program offers two local entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs.
Presenters prepare a 6-minute educational presentation and engage in 20 minutes of feedback and questioning after they present. Entrepreneurs gain insight into possible ways they can improve their businesses, gather real-time feedback, connect with a community that truly cares about their progress, and walk away feeling like they have advanced their business. The audience also learns a great deal from the presentations. Whether this is through passively listening or deeply engaging with the entrepreneurs, there is much to learn every week from these dynamic and diverse communities. The program takes place every Wednesday morning from 8:30-10:00am in locations all around the country. The Washington, D.C. Chapter meets at 1776 DC weekly.

The Buckley Awards, originally founded and organized by the Young Conservatives Coalition from 2010-2016, began as a way to recognize outstanding young professional conservatives and libertarians for their above-and-beyond service to the liberty movement. The award is in honor of William F. Buckley, Jr., who before the age of 30 became the leader of the early conservative movement, championing fusion – a philosophy that brought together various strands of conservatism to work together to achieve political success and conserve America’s founding principles. The award ceremony is still one of the only ones that focuses on the great achievements of young professional liberty lovers. America’s Future Foundation is proud to continue to honor William F. Buckley Jr.’s memory by hosting this event. This year’s Buckley Awards are cosponsored by an amazing group of organizations and individuals, also dedicated to advancing freedom across the nation.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for the Buckley Awards, please contact Cindy Cerquitella at cindy@americasfuture.org or 202.331.2261.

An Evening with Nikki Giovanni
Who: Nikki Giovanni
What: Please join Busboys and Poets Books for an evening with poet Nikki Giovanni!
Nikki Giovanni gained initial fame in the late 1960s as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, which led her to be dubbed the “Poet of the Black Revolution. Her unique and insightful poetry testifies to her own evolving awareness and experiences: from child to young woman, from naive college freshman to seasoned civil rights activist, from daughter to mother.
Her latest venture, “A Good Cry”, shares with the reader a powerful inward exploration and a rumination on her life and the people who have shaped her. The poetry of Nikki Giovanni has spurred movements, turned hearts and informed generations. She’s been hailed as a firebrand, a radical, a healer, and a sage; a wise and courageous voice who has spoken out on the sensitive issues, including race and gender, that touch our national consciousness. Frequently anthologized, Giovanni’s poetry expresses strong racial pride and respect for family. Her informal style makes her work accessible to both adults and children. In addition to collections such as Re: Creation (1970), Love Poems (1997), and The Collected Poems of Nikki Giovanni (2003), Giovanni has published several works of nonfiction, children’s literature and recordings, including the Emmy-award nominated The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection (2004). A frequent lecturer and reader, Giovanni has taught at Rutgers University, Ohio State University, and Virginia Tech.

About World Renowned Actor/Author Omar Epps:
Author and world-renowned actor Omar Epps chronicles his journey from humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York, to the bright lights of Hollywood. Having grown up without his biological father, then becoming a father himself, Epps shares his story of pain and triumph in a uniquely visceral way. It’s an intimate, unapologetic, and emotional conversation about childhood, manhood, and parenting. From Fatherless to Fatherhood touches on many themes surrounding the importance of family and community. It also shows how men can break the cycle of fatherlessness within their families, and come to terms with their own issues surrounding their fathers. Fatherhood is about much more than providing food and shelter for a child. It’s about much more than cutting a check to check a box. Fatherhood is about being active in a child’s life, and cultivating those sacred bonds of family. It’s about guiding and teaching a child how to be a loving, honest, respectful individual who will permeate goodness to all they encounter.
About Activist Athlete Etan Thomas:
His latest work, We Matter “Athletes And Activism” was released March 6th 2018, Thomas has amassed an amazing collection of interviews intertwined with the heartfelt commentary of his own to create a masterpiece. You’ll read the voices of athletes, activists, media personalities, scholars, and the family of victims of police brutality.
In 2012, Thomas released his 2nd book, Fatherhood: Rising To The Ultimate Challenge (Penguin), as a national conversation about fatherhood ensued and The Fatherhood Movement was borne. Thomas continues this conversation holding Town Hall panels through-out the country at prisons, churches, Universities, schools, and various conventions where he continues to inspire, motivate and support generations.

José Andrés: We Fed an Island
Who: Jose Andres
What: Busboys and Poets Books welcomes chef and author José Andrés to discuss and sign his latest book We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time
The true story of how a group of chefs fed hundreds of thousands of hungry Americans after Hurricane Maria and touched the hearts of many more
Chef José Andrés arrived in Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. The economy was destroyed and for most people there was no clean water, no food, no power, no gas, and no way to communicate with the outside world.
Andrés addressed the humanitarian crisis the only way he knew how: by feeding people, one hot meal at a time. From serving sancocho with his friend José Enrique at Enrique’s ravaged restaurant in San Juan to eventually cooking 100,000 meals a day at more than a dozen kitchens across the island, Andrés and his team fed hundreds of thousands of people, including with massive paellas made to serve thousands of people alone.. At the same time, they also confronted a crisis with deep roots, as well as the broken and wasteful system that helps keep some of the biggest charities and NGOs in business.
Based on Andrés’s insider’s take as well as on meetings, messages, and conversations he had while in Puerto Rico, We Fed an Island movingly describes how a network of community kitchens activated real change and tells an extraordinary story of hope in the face of disasters both natural and man-made, offering suggestions for how to address a crisis like this in the future.
Beyond that, a portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Chef Relief Network of World Central Kitchen for efforts in Puerto Rico and beyond.
About José Andrés:
Named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in both 2012 and 2018, and awarded “Outstanding Chef” and “Humanitarian of the Year” by the James Beard Foundation, José Andrés is an internationally-recognized culinary innovator, New York Times bestselling author, educator, television personality, humanitarian, and chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup. A pioneer of Spanish tapas in the United States, he is also known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine and his award-winning group of 31 restaurants located throughout the country and beyond, ranging in a variety of culinary experiences from a food truck to his multi-location vegetable-focused fast casual Beefsteak, to world-class tasting menus like the Michelin-starred minibar by José Andrés. Andrés is the only chef globally that has both a two-star Michelin restaurant and four Bib Gourmands. As a naturalized citizen originally from Spain, Andrés has been a tireless advocate for immigration reform. In 2010, Andrés formed World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that provides smart solutions to end hunger and poverty by using the power of food to empower communities and strengthen economies. Notably, his team served over 3.6 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Andrés’ work has earned awards and distinctions including the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the 2015 National Humanities Medal, one of twelve distinguished recipients of the award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Andrés was also named EY Master Entrepreneur of the Year in Greater Washington for his leadership and impact on the global business community and was awarded the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Chair’s Medallion Award.

National Press Club Communicators’ Summit 2018 – Today’s Biggest Challenges: Technology and Inter-Generational Communications

What: 2018 National Press Club Communicator Summit to Focus on Today’s Biggest Challenges: Technology and Inter-Generational Communications
October 31, 2017 8:30am – 2:30pm
On Wednesday, October 31, the National Press Club will host its annual Communicators’ Summit in the National Press Club, Ballroom — located at 529 14th Street, NW — 13th floor. This year’s program will address new technologies (including Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality) that can help public relations professionals and journalists with effective story telling and reaching audiences. At the same time, because technology has opened doors for consumers to get news and information via numerous platforms, communicators need to reach them not just by those platforms, but by using inter-generational — even multicultural language that resonates and engages towards some action — to buy a product, to vote a particular way, support a POV or even just to inform or educate.
Schedule
8:00-8:30 a.m. – Registration/Networking/Continental Breakfast
8:30-8:35 a.m. – Welcome remarks
8:35-9:35 a.m. — Francesco Marconi, R&D Chief, The Wall Street Journal, will discuss how Artificial Intelligence is delivering new tools that advance the work of journalists and communicators.
9:35-9:45 a.m. – BREAK
9:45-11:00 a.m. — Session I: Understanding Generational Communications — from Mellenials, GEN-Y Z, GEN-Y. How to understand these generations from a communicator and journalist POV and how to reach them with messaging in order to influence and drive change, AND how to work and communicate with these people in the most effective way.
Shira Harrington – CEO of Purposeful Hire, Inc
Omar Jones – Brigadier General, U.S. Army, Chief of Public Affairs
Matt Bennett – Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications, Motion Picture Association of America
Karen Addis – President & CEO at Addis Communications & National Press Club member (Moderator)

11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — Session II: How media organizations are using different technologies and re-purposing news content to reach readers across various audiences (be they generational, multi-cultural, etc) and how can communicators help journalists and media organizations make their jobs easier knowing that content is edited to fit various audiences?
Mary Nahorniak – Deputy Managing Editor of Digital, USA Today
Derek Wallbank – Team Leader, Bloomberg First Word
Joanie Vasiliadis – Director of Digital Content, TEGNA
Lindsay Murphy – VP, Racepoint Global & National Press Club member (moderator)
12:30-1:45 p.m. — Lunch/Luncheon Speaker: Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. Sesno will discuss challenges and opportunities, along with take-aways and lessons for today’s communicators – not just how to use innovation get one’s message out to key audiences (via various platforms), but also what are some issues (be they technological, generational, or even political) that get in the way of good communications. Moderated by Andrea Edney, President of the National Press Club.
