Baldwin House Newsletter
What: In June 2021, we launched an experiment: could neighbors replace investors and developers to create a housing cooperative and mutual aid hub? As a mighty group of about a dozen people combining our time, labor, skills, willingness to learn, and love for our community, we organized to make a counter-offer on the building. The original offer would have kicked residents out on Christmas Eve with only a few weeks notice. Instead, two years later, the building is in control of a group of talented co-op members supported by the broader Baldwin House community.
Where: 2570-2572 Sherman Ave NW in Washington DC
When: Jun 19, 2023

Lucas Abela / Emily Gen
What: Maverick improviser Lucas Granpa Abela (aka Justice Yeldham) has been performing their signature instrument; shards of amplified glass for the past 20 years. Their singular practice spawned from within the international noise music underground, where the glass evolved from a means to create free-noise cacophonies into an oddly versatile instrument producing an organic form of outsider electronica. Abela performs the shards like a bell-less saxophone, their lips subtly transmitting micro-sonic vibrations into the pane.

When: Jun 20, 2023 | 8pm

Protomartyr, Ian Sweet At Black Cat
What: Since their 2012 debut No Passion All Technique, the Detroit post-punk band Protomartyr have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey, guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard, and bassist Scott Davidson—have become synonymous with caustic, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry, the literal and oblique.
Where: Black Cat, 1811 14th Street Northwest, Washington, DC
When: Jun 20, 2023 | 7pm

Title: Don’t Let Them Bury My Story: The Oldest Living Survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre in Her Own Words
Description: “Every day, I have lived through the massacre. While our country may forget this history, I cannot.” —Viola Ford Fletcher. Viola Ford Fletcher’s memoir Don’t Let Them Bury My Story vividly recounts the lasting impact of the Tulsa Massacre on her life. As the oldest survivor and last living witness of the tragic events that unfolded in 1921, she shares her testimony with poignant clarity. From the terror of her childhood as a seven-year-old fleeing the burning streets of Greenwood to her current role as a 109-year-old family matriarch seeking justice for the affected families, Mother Fletcher takes us on a journey through a lifetime of pain and perseverance. Her inspiring story is a powerful reminder that some wounds never fully heal, and we must never forget the lessons of our history.

Title: How We Do It: Black Writers on Craft, Practice, and Skill

Description: How We Do It is an anthology curated by Black writers for the creation and proliferation of Black thought. While a creator’s ethnicity does not solely define them, it is inherently part of who they are and how they interpret the world. For centuries, Black creators have utilized oral and written storytelling traditions in crafting their art. But how does one begin the process of constructing a poem or story or character? How do Black writers, when faced with questions of “authenticity,” dive deep into the essence of their lives and work to find the inherent truth? How We Do It addresses these profound questions. Not a traditional “how to” writing handbook, it seeks to guide rather than dictate and to validate the complexity and range of styles—and even how one thinks about craft itself.

Title: Trinity

Description: Lottie Rebecca Lee is spoken into the world in Fayetteville, North Carolina by a Black nurse who declares, “Lord Jesus, if that ain’t the blackest little baby born this side of heaven.” Later, Lottie will prove that she is the ancestors’ promise to unearth the Mississippi and Ghanaian atrocities that have tormented Benjamin Lee, her grandfather who was born during the Great Depression in Mississippi’s red clay tobacco fields, and Benjamin Junior, his son and Lottie Rebecca’s father, born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the post Korean War GI Bill promises prosperity. These two generations of men are haunted by the Mother-Spirit who did not survive enslavement’s post-traumatic stress violence. Trinity is the riveting story of the daughter-spirit born to stitch love back into the scattered wombs of her Black mothers and call love back into the fishing blues songs of her Black male kin. Lottie Rebecca Lee is the Divine spirited daughter born to set everything back up right again, in this daringly original novel.
