The Fresh Ball: 2nd Annual Hip-Hop Gala
Who: The Fresh Ball
What: Celebrating 17 years of service to Hip-Hop artists, scholars, and communities worldwide.
Our second annual Fresh Ball will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Decatur House, an historic house museum located in the heart of our nation’s capital. The Fresh Ball brings together diverse advocates in the arts, education and nonprofit communities for an evening of global cuisine, Hip-Hop karaoke, and energetic live performances. Proceeds benefit the 501(c)3 nonprofit Words Beats & Life, one of the longest running community groups dedicated to preserving and sharing Hip-Hop culture with youth and adults. The penultimate event in our first ever 10-day citywide Hip-Hop festival, the Fresh Ball helps to support the international exchange of ideas rooted in Hip-Hop, as well as the transfer of that knowledge to the widest possible audience through innovative programs, events, scholarship, teaching, and convening. More than 50% of your ticket price will go to bringing world class production equipment and technology to our newly renovated Institute of Hip-Hop in Columbia Heights. There, we will host classes, events, and other gatherings for curious learners of all ages to promote Hip-Hop elements–Graffiti, DJ’ing, MC’ing–and to provide space for other multidisciplinary knowledge sharing across generational divides as this nearly 45 year-old Hip-Hop culture evolves.

What to expect at the 2018 Fresh Ball:

Award ceremony honoring local and national Hip-Hop cultural contributors
If you’re planning to come with a group of 5 or more, consider reserving one of our 10 personal tables — an opportunity to get close to the action and energy on stage! Half (5-person) and Full (10-person) Tables are available for advance purchase and will also include early entry to the event.
Enjoy food inspired by this year’s Hip-Hop cultural exchange destinations in China, France, and Brazil, or stop by the auction to win a “staycation” at the city’s hottest hotel, among other highly sought-after items from our generous donors.
The evening’s program also features live entertainment and awards honoring those whose contributions often go unsung with DJs spinning all of your favorite Golden Era and current tracks all night long.

Behold. Her Portrait Session: Bare It All
Who: Genevieve
What: “BARE it ALL”
With the holidays rapidly approaching, Behold. Her and Underbares are teaming up to talk about coping with holiday induced anxiety, practicing self-love, and finding comfort being in our own skins. Join us at BUREAU studio on Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 for a stimulating conversation and an intimate portrait experience. Gather with women who want to hear your story and willing to share their own.  Key Talking Points: Holiday Anxieties, Self Love Tactics, Struggles with loving our bodies as is. Join Behold. Her’s special guest and discussion leader, Genevieve , founder & creative director at Underbares, for an honest and nuanced conversation with women at the gorgeous BUREAU studio. We’ll be focusing our energy on developing self worth during a time of year where we’re constantly biting our tongues at the table. We’ll be sharing the table with other women who are wanting to discuss their holiday anxieties and struggles with body image during holiday season (One woman admits that her mother is constantly pressuring her to eat meat despite her being a vegan for most of her life). This session will include a lot of vulnerability as we’ll be photographing portraits at this event wearing Underbares’s bras. You won’t be the only one getting out of your comfort zone and we have a team to lead you through the entire evening.
As women, we’re careful about what we share and how we share, that it has built barriers. This event is meant to challenge you, to push you to break from the norm, and to give you permission to share your story unapologetically.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A small welcome drink and snack, organically led conversation, portraits and interviews of each participants with Behold. Her Founder and Photographer, Leah Beilhart. These images and audio recordings will be used online, adding to an online gallery of faces and voices. This is in a documentary style format.
HOUSE RULES
No phones will be used until the end of the event
No business cards or needing to say what you do
RESPECT privacy
WHAT YOUR TICKET INCLUDES
Your ticket includes small bites, drinks, a private space, an interview and portrait session. You do not get to choose the image (to alleviate time with editing and publishing on time), but you do have the rights to download and use as you please. Requests will not be taken to purchase more images. If you’d like to receive a more in-depth photography session, it will need to be booked outside of Behold.Her. These images are a part of a documentary series. Special offer from BUREAU: 1 month FREE Membership or 25% OFF of an event rental for anyone that attends!
WHAT THE HELL IS A PORTRAIT EVENT These events combine intimate, roundtable discussions and documentary work. These portraits and audio interviews are to mark your moment in time sharing to the public your stand on the topic. We will ask three questions and have them recorded and later shared on our website library. We’re archiving women’s voices today so those tomorrow can listen, be inspired, and acknowledge your power and strength in this process.
WHAT DO I WEAR?
We will be wearing the bras for this photoshoot. You’re welcome to wear high-waisted jeans, skirts, or be in your undies if you prefer! Maybe even an oversized cardigan to throw over your shoulders. Yo do you boo.
